Stained Glass Questions & Answers

What is the process of fabricating new stained glass windows?

The general process for fabrication of a stained glass project:

  • Once the full-scale rendering is completed, individual stained glass pieces are cut based on a pattern. At this point, some of the individual pieces are hand painted and kiln-fired.
  • All the individual pieces are then laid out on the cartoon and arranged according to the design pattern.
  • The lead strips are added to fit around the pieces of glass.
  • The joints are then soldered.
  • After the soldering is complete, the window is puttied. This process seals, weatherproofs, and strengthens the window.
  • An absorbent powered compound is used to soak up the excess putty. Once the powder is removed, the window is cleaned and polished.
  • The final step involves structural reinforcement with steel flat-bar, this helps prevent future bulging and glass breakage.
